In principle, an air purifier is a fan with mechanical or electrical filters that circulates the air in an enclosed space. Nonetheless, the mechanism of the air purifier makes you feel as if it is lowering the room temperature. If you want to invest a little more, you can buy an air purifier with an evaporator that can lower the air temperature at least a little.

Air purifiers cannot be compared to air conditioners. The air purifiers lack the complete refrigeration unit that constitutes the air conditioning system. However, to cool the room fast, such a cooling unit is necessary. 

Although it is commonly believed that air purifiers do not have a cooling function and cannot generate cool air, you can feel some cold air while the air purifier is running. As is well known, warm air rises to the top, while cold air collects on the ground below. Ceiling fans have always used this physical effect to their advantage. For that, summer and winter mode has been created for these devices.

In summer mode, the direction of rotation is set so that airflow is generated from top to bottom. The air is blown down directly on us, and our body heat is transported away. The room feels cooler. In winter mode, the ceiling fan turns exactly the other way around, pulling air from the floor and pushing the warm air to the ceiling.

As already described, air purifiers work in principle like fans. However, because they are not attached to the ceiling, they cannot be compared directly to ceiling fans. Depending on the model and manufacturer, the air purifiers differ significantly in terms of the direction of airflow, where we can notice that there are mainly two types of airflow concepts for in-home air purifiers.


Airflow concepts of air purifiers

Upward flow direction: The most common airflow concept in air purifiers is to draw air from the sides and direct it upwards. This action causes the hot air to be expelled from the ceiling. This is almost identical to the airflow design we know from the winter mode of ceiling fans. So it can be said that this type of air purifier is more suitable for winter in terms of heat distribution. This air purifier will not have any cooling effect in summer.

The direction of flow to the side: These types of air purifiers work just like tower fans with the advantage that they also purify the air. The air is sucked in from the rear or the floor and discharged towards the front. Some models, like the pedestal fans, can let the flow direction oscillate around their vertical axis. The advantage of this concept is that the air is distributed directly to your skin and draws body heat away from you. These air purifiers lower the room temperature so that you benefit from them in the summer season.


Best ways to cool the room air fast

Since an air purifier cannot cool room air, you may be wondering what other options are available. The good news is that it doesn't have to be air conditioning. There are some other useful alternatives you can try in addition to or in place of an air purifier:
  • Fan: The cheapest and perhaps the most obvious alternative to an air purifier with a cooling function is to set up an air purifier and a fan in the same room. Unless you live in a very hot area, this is enough to keep the air in your room clean and cool. Be careful with fans, as drafts can quickly cause colds—especially if you sleep with the fan turned on.
  • Air purifier and humidifier combo: If you want, there are air purifiers with a cooling function – but only in combination with an air humidifier. The 2-in-1 devices first clean the air with various filters and then humidify it with an evaporator mat in distilled water. The evaporation of water removes heat from the air so that the air temperature is not only felt but also actually sinks. This effect is not as effective as air conditioning, but it can be sufficient in some situations. Another disadvantage is that the evaporation mat has to be cleaned regularly. 
  • Water-cooled air-conditioning units: Air-conditioning units with water-cooling reduce the air temperature according to the same principle as 2-in-1 air purifiers and humidifiers; However, the air is not cleaned. Warm air is absorbed and cooled by the evaporation of water. Depending on the design, the fan forces the air through a moisture pad, which absorbs water from the water tank and releases it into the air. If the pads are installed, they not only cause a drop in temperature but also purify the air to a certain extent. Although this type of air conditioning unit has a much lower cooling capacity than an air conditioning system, it is relatively compact and can be moved back and forth between rooms without any problems.
  • Air conditioner: Air conditioning systems have the largest cooling capacity of all the cooling methods presented here. In principle, there are portable and home-installed air conditioning systems. Both work on the same principle. The biggest drawback is that the warm exhaust air has to go outside, and the energy consumption is very high. For those who do not live in areas with extended periods of heat, the purchase, maintenance, and installation are usually not worth the trouble. In the end, each person has to decide for himself how he feels most comfortable.
